From the People’s Car to the super exquisite GoldPlus

The Nano car by Tata Motors was intended for the consumer in India whose pocket does not allow for any extravagant delicacy. It is the rural areas and a small town which houses small time people is what the Nano was aimed for. Tuning the car with gold and jewelry that too of titanic amount contradicts the very focus of the car. However, this is exactly what Goldplus, a Titan industry subsidiary has carried out on the Nano.
Ratan Tata, Chairman Tata Group unveiled this remake at the Tata Theater in Mumbai recently. The car more for publicity stunt has been adorned with 80 kilograms of gold (22 karat, of course), 15 kilograms of silver, and precious and semi precious stones including rubies, pearls, emeralds, and the black beads worn by Hindu brides in a necklace. The work has been carried out by Goldplus which otherwise runs a jewelry store chain.
The Gold rate as on date in the country stands at Rs. 28,147 for 10 grams which computes the car to be valued at a whooping Rs. 225.17 million for the 80 kg of gold that that has been used upon it. Surely not the “people’s car” that the Nano is supposed to be.
Goldplus has been known for its excessive overtures with the shop having created the world’s largest bangle measuring 6 feet in dia and using 25 kg of gold for the purpose. 300,000 customers had come in to view this extravaganza displayed at the shop, as per the shop’s statement.
The jeweled Nano would be up for display at select towns for the next six months and some privileged ones would get the chance to sit in the car for photo ops too.
Though the individual pieces look exquisite the car as a whole may portrays a very vulgar image, to some at least.
In case of the bangle, the item had been melted and the gold retrieved. The car on the other hand is expected to be picked up by some individual of compatible taste and sense as per C.V. Venkataraman, the chief operating officer of the jewelry division of Titan Industries.
