Nano to get a design makeover courtesy NID
Tata Motors Ltd along with the highly prestigious National Institute of Design (NID) is striving hard to give its small wonder a makeover to make it look even more attractive. The company has decided to do so in order to make the car even more appealing to consumers. That the Sanand factory has been running at less than half its fixed capacity of 2.50 lakh cars a year is all too well known.
Though the company had started taking steps since its launch in April 2009 there is much more that is yet to be done. The firm has introduced a fresh version of Nano recently. The new Nano boasts of a better mileage of 25.4 kmph, up from 23.6 kmph the original version was capable of. More colour choices are also being offered. The best part is that the price tag is kept untouched.
Tata has finally signed an agreement with the NID, an autonomous design school under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It would be sending a specimen of the car to India’s premier design institute so that the students can study the specimen and provide the company with necessary designing techniques.
Business Line on Friday was told that the prestigious institute had appealed to Tata Motors for the union because Ahmadabad has now become the automobile hub with many global and national companies setting up shop in Gujarat.
NID students have always had the privilege to work with world class global automobile majors such as Ford, Renault, Pininfarina and Maruti-Suzuki for their academic projects.
He boasted that institute offers a world-class academic course at the post-graduate level and latest facilities in transportation and automobile designing. The courses offered by the institute such as textile design, product design and lifestyle accessories may help the Nano’s design to be a better one.
The industry-institute partnership proposed by NID would benefit both of them. The post graduate Students of NID in Gandhinagar would start working on the project shortly. There is a national intregrity at the campus of NID. It has students from all over India. This fact may prove to be an added advantage to the institute.
