Now a Nano up in flames in Sri Lanka

The Tata Nano, it seems is back to its fiery ways. For hot on the heels of a Nano getting completely gutted in a fire at Anand not far from Sanand — Nano’s birthplace, here is another of the species that came to be engulfed in fire in Sri Lanka. The latest fire accident also marks the first such instance outside of India. What makes it even more of a concern for Tata Motors is that it had just started with shipments to that country and the fire accident will surely make things difficult for the mini car.
The particular Nano that caught fire in Sri Lanka belonged to a Taxi company called the Budget Taxi. Thankfully, the cab was empty when the fire broke out though the car has been completely damaged and rendered unusable. In fact, this is the 9th incident of a Nano catching fire though we are really lucky to have been spare from human casualties so far. Let’s just hope everything is sorted out so that the latest fire incident can well be considered the last.
Tata Motors had just started shipping its Nano small cars to Sri Lanka and is also in the process of launching it in other countries including Europe in the coming months. Sales of the Nano in the domestic market has also been far less than impressive and they surely have a lot of explaining to do to convince buyers the car is really safe.
