Tata has to work really hard in order to fulfill its desire to increase the number of dealership outlets in India to 300 by 2012. Presently there are only 80 exclusive Nano dealership outlets that are operational in the country.

The company has hit upon a new strategy to increase its sales. What they have planned out is, they would now open all new dealership outlets in all the new areas. As of now the firm is extremely busy surveying and inspecting the tier III and tier IV towns. These are the ones with less than 200,000 populations where Tata Motors has no presence so far. Apart from finding good locations, searching for faithful and appreciable dealers in such locations is also proving to be equally challenging.

It has been revealed by one of the spokespersons of the company that they have already conducted operations in towns such as Balurghat (West Bengal), Naihati, (West Bengal), Bhadrak (Orissa), Gajraula (Uttar Pradesh), Rajpura (Punjab), Barshi (Maharashtra), Vita (Maharashtra), Patanjali (Andhra Pradesh), Suryapet (Andhra Pradesh), Dehgam (Gujarat) and more such tier-III and tier-IV small towns.

Additionally he said that presently the company has 704 outlets for Nano. Soon it would have many more.

Though the company is doing all that it can do to improve sales, the elevation in sales witnessed so far still leaves a lot more to be desired. Last year 509 units of the car were sold in November where as this year, to the surprise of many the sales increased 12 fold to 6,401 units. Clearly, the sales are still pretty lower than expectation.

This season the Nano sales have decreased even more. The sales this season are low by 3 percent. That is only 39,646 units were sold against 40,976 units for the year ago period.

According to the present marketing status, Maruti Suzuki has the maximum number of dealership outlets around the country. The company would have to compete with Maruti even at the small towns. Hyundai is also putting out its Rs 2.7 lakh small car Eon for sale in the similar areas.
