The cheapest car in the world is also a huge flop so far
Tata’s product Tata Nano is the cheapest one available in the market today. It can be owned at $2,400 and was expected to rule the markets as well as the Indian streets. The point to be considered is that the Nano has turned out to be a big flop.
In order to develop a car that would suit the pockets of the middle and the lower classes within the budget they had set up, they landed up in trouble. The reports by the Technology Review have revealed that the car is often compared to the three wheeler tuk tuk auto rickshaws which are quite known in the developing countries.
Recent surveys conducted by Tata have also revealed that the car has mainly been designed for the lower income class of the country. These are the ones who often fling from the idea of buying a relatively cheap car or more specifically cheapest car of the world.
Owner of Tata seems to be very ambitious about the sales of the car. He had set up the sales target as high as of 20,000 units per month, so 240,000 units per year where as the company could manage to sell only 70,000 units of the car.
However the company is striving hard in order to attract the folks of the lower classes. They have been putting up the cars in the supermarkets and upgrading the existing one with hybrid and diesel variants. A new version of the Tata Nano has already been released while November sales figure of the Nano has also shown a marked increase. However, its still too early to deem the Nano project a success as the next few months is crucial. Experts will be keenly watching how consumers react to the new 2012 Nano while the new Diesel variant of the Nano is also expected to be launched first half 2012.
